Genesis has revealed a sporty new SUV called the GV80 Coupe Concept – and before we go any further might I suggest you grab some sunglasses?

That radiant new paintwork is called Magma and I actually think it looks pretty great. So too does the blank suede interior with orange detailing on the stitching and seatbelts.

Genesis says this concept is inspired by the X Speedium Coupe Concept from 2022, and you can expect an updated version of the current GV80 SUV to be offered with a similarly sloping roofline.

What probably won’t make mass production are the bucket seats, carbon fiber roof and rear strut brace, which look great but aren’t the most practical options for a family SUV. Instead you should expect to see a more conventional five-seat layout.

Carbon-backed bucket seats are unlikely to be offered on the production version

That said, the exterior looks like the real deal and Genesis is expected to reveal a production version of the GV80 Coupe later this year. That car will likely be powered by the same 2.5-liter gas and 3.0-liter diesel engine options available to current-generation GV80 buyers.

Genesis isn’t giving away much, but says the concept “adds a new facet to the Genesis brand,” adding: “It emphasizes the duality of the Genesis brand by showcasing the contrasts and juxtaposition that live within the athletic and elegance parameters of Genesis’ design philosophy.”

A production version is expected to arrive later in 2023

In plain English, this is Genesis hoping to attract SUV buyers looking for a sportier option than the current GV80. Although compromising headroom for second-row passengers, the SUV coupe is a niche already offered by Porsche with the Cayenne Coupe and Audi with the Sportback variants of its Q3 and A5.

Further pushing home its intentions to offer a sportier SUV, Genesis chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke said: “Over the past seven years, we have added more lifestyle-oriented models to the portfolio, such as our GV80 and GV70 SUVs. Now we are pushing the envelope with more emotional cars that elevate Genesis’ performance and dynamic attributes.”
